The Girl Who Never Was (Otherworld #1) ~ Skylar Dorset

                                                   the girl who never was

I read this book, and have spent plenty of time look at it. Sorting though it. Then I went back to my GoodReads account to get copy of cover … and I still have no idea as to where to begin.
So, I looked to see what my other GoodRead friends were reading this book or had read it. I cam across this:
”Where to start? I’ve been staring at a blinking cursor for a few minutes now, trying to figure out how to put THE GIRL WHO NEVER WAS into some sort of coherent thought …” (From another blogger, All Things Urban Fantasy, who I enjoy checking out what they have read.)
I could have laughed when I read this … here I am having the damnest time trying to figure out what to say & they got part of how I felt right there! I would give them huge hugs … but I will simply go with a thank you on this. (To read the rest of their blog on this book simply click the quote above.) It’s worth the time to see how they felt as well. Before picking up that book … sometimes Bookaholics are worth listening to.

I won’t bother quoting any more of All Things Urban Fantasy, because while I agree with parts of it … for me there is something that has been holding me back from doing this review. I began it, but I could never find the words I needed to finish it until now, when I read another book given from the view point of a teen. Not even close to the same type of story, but it finally click what was  holding me back so much.

Ms. Dorset is definitely a talented writer BUT how she decided to put this one is writing pretty much killed the story. When you write 1st person you need to keep it in that area … to me it felt like she went back to edit it into a 1st person novel. Like parts of it were written to sound like they came from a teen but others were written to sound like they came from another individual. Then at the last minute, Ms. Dorset decided to make it 1st person … which if that is the case, it needs some drastic edits to fix it & make it sound like it is coming from ONE person of the same age. This is like it could be same person of different ages, with a LOT of missing parts too.

                                                              missing parts

You begin a tale about a girl being raised by “nutcase” Aunts, only to learn they may not be as crazy as thought. Let’s not forget the father who is in the insane asylum, but how he actually arrived leaves you searching for “prequels.” Then you bounce from a “friendship” to 1st love in the blink of a eye. Let’s not for the fact that one minute you are dealing with a confused teen to a powerful “whatever” she is. Plus there is the best friend who can manage to jump where humans are suppose to, but does & she doesn’t seem all too phased about it … just because that’s how “best friends” are suppose to act. (So much missing!!!!)
                                                               portrait-of-wide-eyed-girl

When you add all this up, the novel should have been FAR thicker/longer. There is no question that so much was left out of this novel, and the missing parts is what (IMO) causes harm to the story. The idea & characters (for the most part) are well rounded. They keep you wanting to read, hoping to get those missing parts … but when you finish, you are STILL missing them. Those are needed to make this tale an amazing one. They need to be added back in, or found …which ever it is in this cause. (Please!)

When I read the other story, 1st person by a teen, that is where I learned what was bothering me. IF that main character skipped over something, you would find it later in the story. When you finished that book, you all ALL the parts (even if they were a bit out of order in some cases) and that MADE the tale.
That is what I feel has been my main problem with this … I could not place exactly what I was missing, part of the bloody story, is what. It makes you feel that you were NOT given what you thought you were reading.

Will I read book 2 … probably because I want to see if she learned & corrected her errors in the 1st novel. You can tell Ms. Dorset has the skills to do this … but I think she lost something & hope she finds it in the following book.

The Order Box Set ~ Nina Croft

The order

Bittersweet Blood ~ What would you do if you found out that your ENTIRE life was nothing more than a lie? That the world you lived in wasn’t exactly what you thought it was? Welcome to Tara Collins life. Ever since her aunt “died” Tara has come to find out that nothing she thought she knew is the truth & she wants to learn why.
Enter in Christian Roth who runs a PI firm. When this ‘man’ starts looking for the answers, it’s not something that Tara is willing to believe or want to believe.

But willing or wanting doesn’t matter because Christian’s past collides with Tara’s future. Will she be able to make out of this alive? Can Christian stop a demon who wants nothing more than to destroy everything Christian loves?

Bittersweet Magic ~ To avoid being burned at the stake (about 500 yrs. ago) Rosamund Fairfax (Roz) prayed to God but when he didn’t answer, she prayed to a demon (and she got Asmodai) … and made a deal that is almost paid off. Until a psychotic Vamp takes off with the Key. (Lucky for us, there are no individuals who turn this “key” into a human child!) Then he leaves the only Nun marked  but with a message for Piers Lamont.
That simple mission to end the tie to a demon just got quite complicated. Piers is currently the Vamp in charge of the Order … one that Asmodai (Ash in the human world) has told her would destroy her & other “abominations.” After all, why would a DEMON lie?

Piers finds out that the demon queen (and the psychotic vamp) that he imprisoned over 2000 yrs. ago is  free. She wants the key & him back into her life. Only problem is that Piers would prefer to have NOTHING to do with the creature to stole away his chance of being reincarnated.

Bittersweet Darkness ~ To create an amulet (to protect his daughter) Asmodai (Ash Delacourt) becomes indebted to Lucifer. To pay off this debt & have the seal removed, he must begin working with the Order of Shadow Accords. (Yes, there a many questions that come behind WHY Lucifer would want this, but sadly none o them are answered in this story. Fingers crossed as to possible a book simply for that?)
Detective Faith Connolly finds herself wrapped up in a conflict between two organizations … one that has began investigating her former partners new employer & will discover the answer they believe at any cost & the Order. The slime oozing off her NEW boss is just too much for her to tolerate. Plus it is discovered that this organization might be responsible for her mother’s death & the reason she simply cannot/will not believe in anything paranormal.

Can the Order begin preparing Earth for the knowledge that Demons, Angels, Fae, & other paranormal creatures exist? Or will this other organization destroy them before they can get a foot in the door?

Bittersweet Freedom ~ Best way to track down a shifter? Send a werewolf after her!
Poor Carl must hunt down the cat shifter who stole demon gold from Asmodai. Pity that Shera would rather DIE than keep living bound to Asmodai.
Asmodai has turned to Shera’s demon father to take her in because he believes there is an “issue” between Faith & Shera. Shera decides to run instead before she is able to learn Asmodai’s plan.
What Shera does not know is that she is 1/2 demon. Which is why all the changes occurring with her are freighting. Carl knows, but he is under direct orders NOT to tell Shera. But Carl does not know the full extent of Asmodai’s plan either, so he joins Shera on her run. Hoping to convince her that she must return to the demon dimension before the bound destroys her.

Ms. Croft has created one hades of a world. Where there are different dimensions for demons, fae & even one for angels. She creates an Order that keeps peace on the Earth, putting a stop to Demon & Fae wars … this Order is run by Vampires. (And from the description of them, SMOKING Vamps out to save the world.)

Led Astray: Best of Kelly Armstrong ~ Kelly Armstrong

led astray

Ms. Armstrong is one of my favorite authors. I love the Otherworld series & read some of her other works. She builds characters & worlds, pulling you in with each sentence. Ms. Armstrong’s characters are complete, and you get to know they type of person she is creating in them. The worlds different from what we live in and she provides you with the details so you can see that.

Rakshashi
Rakshashi is an interesting tale of a woman who must complete assignments to correct the errors she made in her own life. She has been doing this for over 200 yrs., without being released. If she is released then her master’s family will have to find another way to get income to support themselves.

Kat tells you about a young woman who was tested on before she was taken away from it all. She was taught how to survive, but is on the run … is it because of the vampire who raised her or because those testing her want her back?

A Haunted House of Her Own is an interesting tale of a couple who are wanting to open a Haunted Bed & Breakfast. But is the house they are buying really haunted or is it just nerves spooking them?

Zoe Takano
Learning Curve is about a vampire who is being stalked. Zoe has been letting this stalker chase her for over 2 weeks. How will she handle this? Or will the stalker handle her instead?

The Screams of Dragons is a disturbing tale of a boy who is abused by his grandmother because of dreams he is having about castles. The grandmother fully believes in the folklore of how the Fae would swap their children with those of mankind. She drugs him, making him sick. She beats & refuses to let him eat at night. The parents … they turn a blind eye. This turns a beautiful child into something else. Something shockingly disturbing.

Kitsune’s Nine Tales
The Kitsune’s Nine Tales is about a warrior who was accused of deserting his troops during a battle, as well as being a sorcerer. A man must take this warrior to the Forest of the Dead, the his punishment for this crimes. The guards have been warned that this prisoner will try 9 times to convince them to turn him loose. They have been given the exact things that he will try. Will they make it there & back? Are the charges for the crimes accurate or completely false?

Last Stand is about the after effects of an antibiotic that destroys a good part of humankind. Creating two groups … those who were infected by the new virus and those who were not. One group is just trying to live, while the other is set out to destroy them. This group must decide who they are going to fight with so few individuals. Will they use the prisoners they have captured? Or will they simple parish?

Bamboozled is set in the Dakota Territory in 1877. You have a group that is set out to for thieving. They choose their targets and then work on completing that mission. But for some reason this “job” does not go exactly as planned. Some of the characters aren’t who they appear to be.

post-apocalyptic fortress
Branded is about the after effects of when the paranormal individuals or creatures have come out. Where human-kind has sealed themselves in away from what they fear. If they discover you have paranormal blood, you are branded and exiled. But they, also, use this for other crimes. In this story you read about a young man & woman, one is branded and exiled from the city. The other is distraught and not believing they punished the other correctly. How will they solve this? Will they be able to survive it?

black-and-white-horror-vampire-teeth-bite
The List is simple about a list that was provided of supposedly vampires in . Zoe is determined to listen to what this scientist has to say. She is amused that she is not on this list. She is, also, determined that Brittany (1/2 demon) learns more; educationally, self-defense & style-wise. They both go to listen to Dr. Adair lecture about vampires. Discussing the what he got close to being right about & what he did not. But when you have lectures about vampires, you bring out the strangest individuals & even some of the dangerous ones.
fire demon

Young Bloods is about two vampires who have created a bit of a crime issue in the city they arrived at recently. They are caught on a subway, where a passenger realizes they are the criminals leaving dead drained bodies around the city for the police to investigate. Will this passenger be able to make it off this subway car? Will any of the other passengers?
young vampire

opening door
The Door is a strange story. The child in the story has been told never to exit the front door, never to even go out it. She is allowed to be in the back yard, but never the front door. She is not to go over the fence, she must stay in the yard. It is about a small family, that grows to include another child. But the father dies after becoming ill, leaving it to the mother to collect food for her family. Sadly, going out the front door seems to be the reason of the illness. What is causing it? Will the two sisters be able to survive this?

Dead Flowers
Dead Flowers by the Roadside is about a man who looses his wife and child during a vehicle accident 3 months ago. He is devastated & depressed, barely making it though each day. All he wants is to see his wife & daughter again, but the ghosts he does see are not them. Nor will they help him find them or get a message to them … they completely avoid him because they know he will not help them now.

Suffer the Children is about a town/village that loose many individuals. Sadly most of them are children. The town is given a chance to “bring the children back from the dead.” There is a cost, financially & ethically. It comes down to what you would consider doing to get your child back … even from death.

puzzle
The Collector discusses different types of puzzles. As well as the person solving them. The woman enjoys solving them, as well as the story that go with them.

gargoyle
Gabriel’s Gargoyles is about finding the last gargoyle in Cainsville. In this story you learn what a great deal about Gabriel. He’s mature for his age, as well as determined to discover where the finally gargoyle is.

Harbinger is exactly what it says “a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another.” In this case it happens to be the “spirits” of dead girls who were drowned. The reason for them being there is something that Jenna must discover on her own, because these “spirits” aren’t going to tell her at all.

Nicholas Sorrentino
V Plates, I about hit the floor laughing when I figured out what “v plates” meant. I love the Otherworld series, and this one has Nick watching over a teenage Pack mate. From the past stories that involved Nick, you know he’s a “playboy.” So how he handles this “problem” will prove to be interesting!
Nicholas Sorrentino

Life Sentence is simply about living & immortality. Everyone wants to live longer. Everyone would also like to be immune to everything. In this story, it is gone over in varies ways. How to become immortal. Pity that people don’t always see the down side.

Plan B is something you always need in life. But in this story, you will find that having a Plan B is REQUIRED.

the wild hunt
The Hunt teaches us that no matter what you hunt, there will always be something or someone out there to make you pay for what you did.

Dead to Me explores what happens when a person dies and has not been given what they are searching for.

mallt-y-nos
Devil May Care provides an interesting tale of a Fae who lives without responsibility. Oh, he might have an income … but other than that, he enjoys the lack of responsibility. He does not want to be be tied down. He does not want commitment. Sadly, fate or destiny might just jump in & slap you silly if you think you can live that.

The Awakening (Hasea Chronicles #1) ~ Stuart Meczes

awakening

When you begin this book, it takes a bit to get use to the idea that the writer is trying to express. It is almost like a jumble of ideas floating around but you have yet to figure out who they are all connected.
This is not your typical paranormal type of book. In this world, or worlds, you will find a new idea of where the different paranormal types come from. But to get to that point you have to go though the jumble of ideas in the beginning.
I almost stopped reading the book altogether. I did stop, and read a few others in between finishing the book. Mainly because it was starting to frustrate me. But after I got past the jumble of ideas, I discovered it to be a great read. You just have to find the patience to keep reading, because you will then discover the mystery behind what is going on in the book.

A boy, Alexander Eden,  who is bullied by kids at school & even his own stepfather (which you find out why later in the book) discovers that he is not exactly like the others he goes to school with. He shares part of this with this (half-)brother, Mikey, because he needs to be able to discuss it with someone he can truly trust.
Then enters the Gabriella De Luca, who has all the answers he needs but is there to watch him. To ensure that he makes it though the transition he is going though. But there is more to Ella than what appears in the beginning, and she must decide if she can trust Alex enough to tell him.

You will read about a large variety of types of individuals (Sage Faru, Midnight, Delagio, Sylvia, Scarlett, Dakin, Tyler, Rachel, Sophia, Selene, Lafelei, Mikey, Sage Etorre, Sage Asmund …). Each of them has a tale that improves upon the story. Each of them is just as valuable to the story as Alex & Ella, because without them … the story would crash and be nothing.

In the end, you find the jumble of ideas in the beginning to make more sense. The mystery becomes crystal clear, and you are glad you took the time to read the story.
I am looking forward to reading book two in this series. Mr. Meczes has an interesting way of putting a jumble of ideas together creating a world & story that pull you in. It is rare to find a writer that can frustrate you but keep you reading, slowly pulling you into a story.
