Enigma ~ Tonya Kuper

EnigmaTour

First things, First … I am giving this review in my HONEST opinion of the book. I received this book from NetGalley & was asked to give my HONEST opinion. (Which we ALL know I will do … right?)

Enigma Cover

Now I left off the Anomaly without tell you much of anything. Because if I had I would have spoiled so much of the story. But since this is book 2, I would HOPE you have read Anomaly … so none of this will be spoilers for you. So here goes A LOT Winking smile of info.

Reid & Josie are now off on their own. They handed off the serum Josie mom, Meg created that would help expand the length of how long any Oculi could have their powers. After a time, the powers deplete leaving the Oculi with nothing … no ability they once were able to use. They could not create no living items (like trees, cars, chairs, pizza, juice, guns & so on … these are the Pushers). They could not retract or remove items (like trees, cars, chairs, pizza, juice, guns & so on … these are the Rectracters). Or the Anomalies who could do both.
These abilities allowed the Oculi to be able to create or remove items that did not have a soul. Because of this, you have two opposing forces … pretty much like you would in any world that would have any type of powers … The Schrodinger’s Consortium and the Resistance.
Meg & her husband use to work for the Consortium believing this group was out to help for the Oculi. Meg had created a serum that increased the ability of the Anomalies. This was how, during their involvement, they discovered the Consortium was trying to destroy all Anomalies … which they both were. During their attempt to leave, they were discovered, each took 1/2 of the serum & injected it into themselves. This was to prevent the Consortium from using it to reverse the effect to destroy the Anomalies.
They, Meg & her husband, created the Resistance with friends who wanted to ensure that all Oculi were treated equally & not wiped out. But Meg & her husband had to go into hiding because the Consortium wanted them back. Plus when they learned they had 3 children …. they wanted them even more.
When their oldest turned 17, his powers were beyond what most Anomalies had. He began hiding things, disappearing … it seamed that he lost his mind. But he was recruited by the Consortium. This caused Meg’s husbands, Josie’s father to go undercover … he went back into the Consortium. But his face was not the same face that they were use to seeing.
While you cannot create a human or an animal, you can change a persons appearance. Which Josie found out with Reid. He was Cal, her brother’s best friend & her long time crush. But when she met him he had a completely different face because to keep the Consortium off the trail of her family, he was the bait the Resistance used.
Now that you are bit up to date, and have an idea of what the hades is going on let’s get moving on with Emigma!!! FYI, part of that above is from Emigma … guess you will figure that out when you get to reading it.

Josie is torn to hades and back in the beginning. She killed Santos, who just happened to be a Consortium spy … doesn’t that just bit the big one? … she had no choice in the matter. It was either him or her & Reid. In that little part you will find that Josie is not exactly the Anomily that every thinks she is. That and the fact she pulled in a freaking tropical storm (in my opinion I think that is a bit beyond the Anomily ability).
Reid is suppose to take Josie to a safe house. But he has received a message from her mother stating that there is a mole in the Hub that they are to find. Plus that is where she & Josie’s younger brother, Eli are headed. Reid leaves the decision up to Josie … Safe house or Hub. Of course, we know Josie will decided on the Hub. That is the type of character she is, strong & there is no way she will let her family walk into a place without her to help them out.
The Hub … This is where most of the Resistance live. They train, get their education, live & basically have their own little society going on. It is suppose to be hidden from the Consortium, but when you have a mole there … it’s not so hidden. But from my understanding they have other such areas too.

Upon arriving at the Hub, hidden in a mine cave, Reid gets the shock of his life … he is greeted by his father, after Reid requests a E3 meeting. But the shock does not stop he from questioning his father to make sure that he is who he claims to be.
The E3 meeting does not go as planned. The group of adults do NOT believe that there could possibly be a mole inside the Hub. They are a bit shock that Santos was a Consortium spy. Plus that he gave Josie an choice come willingly or die. Also, that he tried to steal the serum that Meg, Josie’s Mom, created to extend the length Oculi could have their abilities. Reid get’s a bit hot tempered and demands that they do something but is blown off. They council tells him that he is willing to do the search himself but he will NOT find the spy himself because their security is above & beyond … there is NO way a spy could be in the Hub.
They then move on to the location of Josie’s mother & brother. Troops are sent out to locate them. There is a bit of concern because other founding members have been disappearing. They are not sure if they are dead or being held hostage … or have simply left.
The council is, also, concerned that Josie might be “loosing it” like her oldest brother, Nick, did. But Reid informs them that that is not happening. She has kept her grip on reality & her powers are far beyond what ever they imagine. The council then beings setting up test for the following morning to see this, as well as test her sanity plus to see what type of “weapon” she could be used as. (Aren’t they such a sweet little bunch?)

Enigma3

When Meg & Eli arrive. This is when the mind tricks begin. Eli is outside the training room, looking for the bathroom when Reid & Josie appear. He runs and hugs Josie … which she really should have thought twice about that because he complained last time she did that … but she is just excited to see her brother. She convinces  him to allow Reid to take him to the bathroom after he takes her to the training room.
When she walks in … She about flips out! There is her mother & Eli. Plus Reid’s Dad, Cohen, Kat & Zac. They do not understand why she is upset, until she explains that she just saw Eli in the hallway. Reid comes rushing in saying Eli is missing, he didn’t come out of the bathroom … they all realize just how close that the mole got to Josie.
When Council members enter during this time believing this is a sign that she is sign of her slipping sanity. But Reid stands up & says he also saw Eli. He explains how he took him to the bathroom & how he just simply disappeared. This is pretty much a slap in the face the the Council who swore there was no way over the time they have been there.
Even though there was a mole running around the Hub the Council decided it was time, right that second, to begin testing Josie. Despite the objections of Meg, Josie’s mother. Josie, on the other hand, fully of her typical attitude & agitation agreed. They were going to start with hand-to-hand combat only using her shield as a last resort … if you read Anomaly, you know her shield kicks arse!!!
Cohen was the one chosen to fight Josie. He was much more experienced, even though Josie practiced daily, he actually trained constantly. During the beginning of the fight, Josie did good. Blocking the punches & kicks coming her way. But sadly, on one block Cohen leaned in & pushed her causing her to fall back. That was her down fall, and sadly for Cohen it would be his too. After  his attacks pushed Josie into the wall, her shield came up. Throwing Cohen back, as well as the standing Reid. All parties where then told to go the the infirmary.
As for the Council, they were a hyped up little bunch a this point. They found an Oculi that was “unique” and “unexpected.” They believed she was more than an Anomaly, they believed she was “an Enigma.” Can you imagine the type of weapon they were going to try to use that 17 yr. old for?

Later in the book the mole decides to play a sick little game. He makes Josie think she is loosing her mind by looking like Reid, when she is standing with Reid. Then when Reid is blowing off steam because he knows something is wrong with Josie after that instant, the mole looks in the window looking like Santos. Reid rushes out after but misses the mole. But he rushes asking her if she saw Santos either that day. That is when she spills the beans & tells him everything … even her plan on killing the mole & disappearing because she thought she was going nuts.

Enigma5

But guess what folks that is all you are getting out of me … pretty interesting story so far huh?
What I like about reading YA books is there is not sex scene after sex scene … don’t get me wrong. I love adult paranormal or sci-fi books but even I need a break from them. Going back to read something fresh where you have young love is sweet & reminds you of when you 1st fell for your sweetheart (if you have one … hey I do & he’s perfect for me).

Enigma4
In this story, Ms. Kuper keeps the scenes light & does not push it. Yes there is a little bit of tension, because they have to hid the fact of their attraction or love due to the rules of the Hub/Resistance while Josie is in training.

Tonya Kuper

Does Ms. Kuper provide you with a story that you want to read? Yes. Should you add it you your list? Yes, I would add it to your top 5 because she provides you a world that gives you twists & turns that will surprise you in ways that you would not believe. Does you age actually matter when you are reading this book? I would hope not. For the YA it gives you hopes & dreams. Plus it should provide you with confidence to step up to do your own thing. For those older, it gives us a chance to fall back to when we were that age and remember having those hopes & dreams … and giving us a kick in the arse to have them again. Plus it gets us a way from sex scene after sex scene in a lot of adult books Confused smile

Anomaly ~ Tonya Kuper

Anomaly

I began reading this book because I was asked to do an honest review of Enigma by Tonya Kuper … but coming into a series that really needs you to stay in order. Well, I had to pick up book one 1st.
So, I began reading Anomaly. Entering a world that has a special type of people: Pushers, Retracters & Anomalies. I would go into what these individuals are but that would be a bit of a spoiler for this book.

In this book you will learn who Josie is. What her link to this entire series is, as well as the powers she has. You will, also, find that her parents are not what you would call the “normal” type of parents. (No they are not abusive, but they are definitely not normal.)

You will also meet Reid and discover who he use to be. You will find out what he is able to do. But Reid has several secrets that could harm his any type of relationship with Josie. He just has to have to nerve to tell her or not to tell  her … problem is, if you don’t tell someone, eventually those secrets will come to light even if you don’t want them too.

You will meet Santos, who is Reid’s teammate & best friend in all this. He here to help train Josie with the powers she get’s on her 17th birthday … yea, what a way to discover you are just a bit different!

There are a lot of twists in this story. Ups & downs plus things you just don’t think would actually believe would happen in our world … they definitely happen in this one.

Tonya Kuper

Ms. Kuper writing is definitely worth reading. She has created characters that are full & intriguing. Ones that make you want to keep reading, to find out what they will do next in a world made just for them. I am excited to read the next book in this series!!!

Ice Wolf (Artic Brotherhood 1) ~ Jane Godman

                                                   ice wolf

Yea I have a thing about supernatural or paranormal books … to me they are thrilling and entertaining. Whether they are horror type or not, they take you out of this world and into another.

This begins with Gunner, the once leader of the “Brotherhood of the Midnight Sun,” trying to pull Elliott Wilder back into the the brotherhood for another fight. But Elliot wants the seclusion & anonymity he has being a college professor.
Problem with this simple idea? The Siberian Wolf that tortured them 400 yrs. before has broken free and he wants revenge. His 1st target is Elliot, until he see Elliot with Jenny Piper. Then also goes after her to hurt Elliot. But Gunner is with her trying to get her to join the Brotherhood when they are attacked. From there Elliot is in charge of the Brotherhood to bring down the Siberian Wolf, who is more than he appears to be.

The catch to this story is that the Siberian Wolf isn’t the main goal. What the Siberian Wolf released on to the world is far worse than he was. Can the Brotherhood bound together to defeat this new threat to the werewolves & mankind? Or will they be defeated wolf by wolf?

Ms. Godman created a unique world that draws you into the world where there are different types of werewolves & myths they belong to. Where they change is quick, in the blink of an eye (almost), and painless. Where they live in a society that doesn’t even know they exist.
I found the writing and telling of this story worth reading book two, Shadow Wolf.

Who do you choose your next book?

I cannot even guess on many people. But for me it revolves around the cover, title & what the book is about.
Oh I have my favorite authors, but even they can let you down ever so often. It’s not that the book is bad, for me it’s just not up the the standard I expect from them. (But that’s life, right?)

The cover … has to draw my attention to it out of all the books or eBooks around it. If the cover doesn’t pull me in, I usually find the book/eBook to be rather boring & not worth my time. But I will read to the end … even if I have to take breaks a lot!!!

The title … I love interesting titles. If they make me laugh, I will read. If they are silly or quirky, I will read. After all the title of the book is suppose to be that catches your eye, right? Makes you want to check out what the books about.

What the book is about, that can always draw you in more or it can turn you away. For me I check it out, if it’s one of those so-so, I will still read it because the other two caught my attention. I add it to my never-ending-reading-list!! Does this have to be outstanding to make you want to read the book, for me if it’s dull & boring … it won’t ever make that list. But I am willing to TRY anything else.

My other favorite thing to do is have a few of the list & choose from them. Looking over titles, covers & what the book is about … then picking the one or two that I like the best. Then I dive in.

I bounce between GoodReads, OverDrive, Amazon & NetGalley a lot. NetGalley provides me with free books (they have so many listed it’s not funny), all they ask is once I am finished I provide my honest opinion. Which I do, I post it here & once it’s published I copy it to all three of the above.
GoodReads has suggestions for me. Along with many GR members who give their reviews on a book. Those are great to read because it will either give me that push to read the book, or move on to the next one. They are usually right on the spot.
Amazon … with Prime I get free reads. But since I have a Kindle, I also have to option to get other free books. Which lead me to new authors that I can purchase their books or check with OverDrive to see if they are available. (I wish I had all the money in the world to purchase all the books I run across, but I don’t Crying face )
OverDrive … this is an online library. You can access you local library (make sure you have a card or account). I have access to 3 different library’s, which I truly love. My local library, Army MWR Library, and the one my Mom use to use (because I was there so often I got an account). Now, if you are in a military community, you will have to make use you update your account, usually, yearly. With MWR, every time you get a new ID  you will have to update your account. I have found that in towns where military is not connected, they don’t update your account. But you can run across all different types of books using OverDrive. (and save a little money)

When  you choose the next book to read or add to your list, think about how you do decide. How that patricidal book got your attention over the rest? Was the cover better than the others, was the title something that made you look twice? Or did you choose it just because one of your favorite authors published it? Did some of your friends talk about it & made you want to read it? Or are you taking a chance on a new author? Where you asked to review the book?

Bring on the Psychobitch (Some Girls Do It #3) ~ May Sage

                                                    the psychobitch

In my life, or shall I say it better “my book reading,” there are only a few things that will pull me right off to a book. The cover, if displayed to show the cover or if I am looking at it online. The author, because even I have my fav’s. An interesting or funny title, because it takes a little brilliance to choose it and hold on to it … or live with it. Winking smile

Bring on the Psychobitch (different link than that of book cover) … you know that had to take some convincing to be kept. But I saw the title, the cover is not what pulled me in, but the description. I had to read a book where the main character called herself that with PRIDE. Hey, we all have those points where we blow it off name calling but very few of us stand up & take those names with the pride this author created in  her main character. (Guessing that she has been there & prob does that!)

Ms. Sage not only give you present but the past as well to create a character that you will either love or despise. Me, I rather like this character but then I like strong-will individuals. Sure anyone can try to create that, but if you fail … you fail miserable with a character that most bookaholics want to throttle. But if you succeed, like Ms. Safe did here, then you end up with a story that makes the reader want more. Keep them reading what you do write, and coming back for more.

Cupid Stupid: Return to Cupid, Texas #1 ~ Sylvia McDaniel

                                                        stupid cupid

I have to give a Ms. McDaniel a round of apologize on this story. The title is what pulled me into reading the book, but thankfully it had some type of cover or I would have blown it off.
I am sorry to all the authors out there … but I have this HUGE problem … if there is NO cover, I just cannot pull myself into reading the book or eBook. Yes, that is horrid for a bookaholic to state, but I have tried in the past, only to find the books/eBooks not worth the time. So, from those experiences … well, that is why I just find myself not reading the books, I have tried but I just cannot.

The cover is typical of a romance-type novel … interesting background with some appealing individual on the front. Suppose to pull your eye to the cover. But to be honest, with a title like Cupid Stupid, you could have ditched the individual!!!
I have not bothered to see if there is truly a Cupid Texas, but the detail that Ms. McDaniel goes into writing about this town … there really doesn’t need to be. Because you can picture what she is describing without researching it. Then she puts all that into the tale & the characters, which pull you in & make you want to read to the end.

Cupid Texas has a Cupid Statue with an interesting rumor. If you dance NAKED (oh the poor fool who does LOL) around the statue you will find true love. Hmmm, if this town exists I feel for the local law enforcement … well, may not LOL.
3 life times friends have finally all moved back to their sweet but interesting home town. And on one night of being a little blitzed on wine (can people really get drunk on wine? I can’t stand it unless it’s the German Hot Wine), decide to dance around Cupid to find true love. Well, actually two of them want that but the 3rd has been burnt to a crisp. Therefore wanting NOTHING to do with love or relationships.
Wanna guess which character starts off this series?? Yep, Miss I-don’t-want-a-relationship-or-love but the catch is with the individual who is chasing her down … one of her best friends EX’s. Oh, let’s not forget he is the town SHERRIFF. I about died when I read that little bit, sure it’s one thing to be chased by the law if you broke it. But it’s a complete different story when they want to see if you are “the one.”

I read this book, because it had an interesting title. I love books like that. But now I curious as to how Ms. McDaniel’s gonna pull of the other two love takes. Both of which have interesting tales behind them.
Had the title not drawn me in, I would not have more books to add to my never ending list of reads. But when you create a title like this, it is calling “read me, read me.” Until you give up and start with page 1.

A Duke by December (A Year W/Out the Duke #5) ~ Sabrina Darby

duke by dec

Every so often I find historical romances. The title interests me, or in this case the series, and I start reading. I must say that I am pretty impressed that they were able to put together this series with a variety of authors.

Growing up dirt poor can really mess some individuals up. But imagine that the girl you “love” is at a higher social level than you. What would you do when you were told ‘no’ to the request to marry her & then discover she was to be married to someone from the same social level as her family?
For Nathaniel Hughes the answer is simple, leave for America. Create your own future just to show that fool that you are far better than they see you from the tips of their noses. Which is exactly what the new heir of the Beckworth estate has done for himself. Only now, he has to head back to merry ol’ England to become the Duke of Beckworth.
Yes, he could turn it down. But this is a man of honor, who accepts the challenge. Bringing along his secretary Elizabeth Smith & her brother.

Ms. Smith will follow Mr. Hughes around the world. He saved them in the Arkansas Territory. He then taught her, and eventually she became his secretary. Helping with with all business matters … which is some what OK in America but not exactly something the approve of in England.

In this story, you have a unique look on one authors view of how America use to be. It’s shocking, in some ways. But Ms. Darby proved that what she started in a novel. I am highly impressed with how she created this story, involving much more than two simple individuals. She involves a lot more.

As for the series … yes, I had to read them all. “Bloody Hell” how was I to find out what happened to all the extra characters in the book. (Just keep reading the letters from the head housekeeper & lawyer … they are interesting & would have made a GREAT story to go with this series!)
